The purported Tata Nexon could be a DCT-equipped test mule whose market launch might take place later this year

Recently, a test prototype which is assumed to be of an upcoming DCT variant of the Tata Nexon was spotted in Pune. It may be noted that in a recent interview, Tata also revealed its plan to upgrade its model's lineup every couple of months. With this, we can safely predict that Tata’s popular compact SUV could be due for a big upgrade that will bring in a dual-clutch automatic transmission similar to the one on the Kia Seltos 1.4 Turbo and Hyundai Creta 1.4 Turbo.

Currently, Tata Nexon is available with a 6-speed MT and a 6-speed AMT unit. You know it, the automated manual transmission might score well in terms of fuel efficiency but it’s not ideal for automatic car enthusiasts. It entails heavy shifting and accelerating lags compared with the other types of automatic transmissions. Therefore, to lure in more customers towards its dealers, Tata possibly makes the Nexon available with an optional dual-clutch transmission.

The Tata Nexon is being on sale with a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine option making 120 PS of max power and 170 Nm of peak torque. There’s also a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel unit tuned to produce 110 PS/ 250 Nm of torque. Mostly, the imminent DCT could be available with the petrol model only as the diesel engine has been offered with an AMT option. Definitely, the DCT will make it to the top-spec trims like XZ or XZ (O).

Some cosmetic changes to the Tata Nexon DCT might include graphics and stickers with DCT emblems, a completely-black interior option along with some sporty design elements. Information about the interior of the Tata Nexon DCT is still scarce at this point.

If the speculation is to be believed, we expect the Tata Nexon DCT to carry a premium of around Rs 30,000 over its AMT configuration. Presently, the Nexon is the costliest SUVs of the segment with its price positioned at around Rs 6.95 – 12.7 lakh (Ex-showroom). Do note that Tata Nexon’s arch-rival, Hyundai Venue already gets a DCT for its turbocharged motor option.
