Jeep has launched the updated Compass SUV in the Indian auto market. Today we have this comparison between the Compass and its direct rivals, the updated MG Hector and Tata Harrier.

Jeep has just launched the mid-life update for its Jeep Compass SUV in the Indian market as the US-automaker intends to stop the sales decline the SUV has been facing. The mid-size SUV segment is one of the most competitive in the country currently as consumer demanding a vehicle with the latest features, attention-grabbing looks, and powerful powertrains. The new Compass will compete with the likes of the MG Hector that also just received a mid-life update and the Tata Harrier which got some important updates last year. The old Jeep Compass was seriously starting to show its age when it came to features as newer rivals came with the latest list of features. Jeep, realizing this has given the updated Compass a feature list that brings the interior to 2021. It now gets all-new 10.1-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system with Jeep’s new UConnect 5 system and connected car technology, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa support, 8-way powered and ventilated front seats, a fully digital 10.25-inch instrument cluster, a wireless charging pad, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, different driving modes and a powered tailgate as well.

With the latest update for the MG Hector, it also gets a feature-loaded cabin. It now gets a new 10.4-inch vertical touchscreen infotainment with connected car technology and support for English as well as Hinglish voice commands, panoramic sunroof, a semi-digital instrument cluster, electrically adjustable and ventilated front seats, interior ambient lighting, remote control via smartwatch, an auto-dimming IRVM and much more.

Not to be left behind, the Tata Harrier comes with features like an 8.8-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connected car-tech, a 6-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat, a 9-speaker premium audio system from JBL, cruise control, a 7-inch display for the instrument cluster, an auto-dimming IRVM, a panoramic sunroof, xenon HID projector headlamps and more.

The updated Jeep Compass dimensions come in at 4395 mm in length, 1818 mm in width, stands 1640 mm tall and has a 2636 mm long wheelbase. Compared to this, the MG Hector measures 4655 mm long, 1835 mm wide, 1760 mm tall and gets a wheelbase that measures 2750 mm in length. This makes the MG Hector the biggest SUV among the three. The Tata Harrier sits on the middle with dimensions of  4598 mm in length, a width of 1894 mm, a height of 1706 mm and a 2741 mm long wheelbase.

All three SUVs are powered by the FCA-sourced 2-litre four-pot diesel, though the Jeep Compass’ unit is a smidge more powerful. The Compass makes a max power figure of 173 PS while the other two makes 170 PS, while peak torque remains the same at 350 Nm. All three SUVs come mated to a 6-speed manual, but the Harrier comes with a 6-speed automatic also while the Compass gets an optional 9-speed automatic.

Powering all three SUVs is the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine that comes from the house of FCA, however, the unit on the Compass is marginally more powerful. The Harrier and Hector diesel have a max power output of 170 PS, while the Compass diesel generates 173 PS. The torque output remains the same for the three cars, and 6-speed manual transmission is also standard. However, the Compass gets an optional 9-speed torque converter automatic gearbox, while Tata has equipped the Harrier with an optional Hyundai-sourced 6-speed AT.

The Jeep Compass and the MG Hector both offer a petrol engine as well which the Tata Harrier misses out on. The Jeep comes with a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol which makes 163 PS/250 Nm of peak power and torque and is mated to a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT. The MG Hector is fitted with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol as well, churning out max power and torque figures of 143 PS/250 Nm and comes paired with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed DCT.

One thing to note, the diesel Jeep Compass can be purchased with a 4x4 system while both the MG Hector and Tata Harrier only come with a front-wheel-drive setup.

The 2021 Jeep Compass is the most expensive of three, with prices ranging between Rs 16.99 lakh – Rs 28.29 lakh. The MG Hector is the cheapest with its pricing between Rs 12.89 lakh – Rs 18.32 lakh. The Tata Harrier comes in the middle once more, priced between Rs 13.99 lakh – Rs 20.45 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom.
