The 2020 Mahindra Thar has been spied again, thereby revealing some important new details about the all-new upcoming off-roader.

The forthcoming BNVSAP safety standards have led many Indian auto manufacturers to update their models. The Mahindra Thar is not an exception. It will get an updated version next year after being officially debuted at the 2020 Auto Expo. The test mule, though heavily camouflaged, did hint at some possible changes.

The new-gen Mahindra Thar has been recently spied under heavy camouflage

Despite being underpinned by a brand-new platform which will provide better safety than the outgoing model, the 2020 Mahindra Thar continues to carry the well-known classic look to ensure the popularity of the new vehicle. The front of the new Thar still looks iconic but fresher, thanks to a flusher front face with a seven-slat grille. The plastic cladding on the fenders has also been eliminated, which contributes to the rugged look of the vehicle.

Regarding the dimensions, just a look at the 2020 Mahindra Thar can indicate that the new vehicle measures greater in length, width and height than the existing model. It also rides on larger wheels with higher ground clearance. These increased dimensions make it look like the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon’s 3-door version and will translate into a more amber cabin.

The 2020 Mahindra Thar is anticipated to be powered by a BSVI-compliant updated 2.2L diesel motor. The power will be sent to the four wheels via a 5-speed MT gearbox. Mahindra is also expected to introduce a hardtop version which will compete against the Force Gurkha, the only direct rival of the new Thar up to now, as there is little likelihood that Suzuki will bring the Jimny to India due to a lack of the diesel motor.
