American carmaker Ford is under a criminal investigation for flouting emission norms and incorrectly acquiring emission certification

After Volkswagen's Dieselgate emission scandal, which happened back in 2015, reports now state that America's biggest car manufacturer Ford is under criminal investigations for its emission certification process. It's noteworthy that Ford has voluntarily disclosed potential concern to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California’s Air Resources Board.

After VW, it now looks like Ford's turn to face the heat for flouting emission norms and wrongly achieving emission clearance.

The reports also suggest that the company has hired some outside experts to assess its measuring process after employees raised concerns.
The investigation will mainly spin around Ford's testing strategy which includes road load, where the drag and resistance of the vehicles are calculated, and the coast down modes, where a vehicle slows down to halt when the power is no longer supplied. A change in these figures can result in a difference of about 7%. For now, the investigation is in its early stages. But, it is quite expected that Ford could face hefty fines in the near future.

The reports also suggest that emission coming out from cars from almost all manufacturers exceed the pollution limits. It is expected that EPA will take some strict legal action against other car manufacturers.

In India, Ford and Mahindra could soon form a joint-venture company. The JV will launch a mid-size SUV into the Indian market by 2022. The upcoming SUV is most likely to be based on the next-gen XUV500, which, in turn, could be based on the latest-gen Ssangyong Korando that was revealed last month at the Geneva Motor Show. Ford is also planning to close down its operations in India. They will most likely use their existing plant in India to manufacture only export-spec cars. Powering this new Mahindra-Ford SUV will be an all-aluminium 2.0-litre diesel mill which will power a range of upcoming Mahindra models. For the new SUV, it should produce 155bhp of maximum power.
