Hyundai Sells Highest No. Of SUVs in 2020

The Creta was the highest selling SUV in India for 2020. With over 7 lakh units sold, the SUV segment barely showed any slowdown in a pandemic hit year. Full details below.

SUVs are the most in-demand vehicles in India and is very evident by looking at the 2020 sales figures. While the auto industry, in general, faced a slump due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the ensuing lockdown, SUV sales remained strong through the year. SUV sales in 2020 totalled at 7,07,152 units, which is only around 6% lower than the 7,54,892 units sold in 2019. Hyundai sold the highest number of SUVs in 2020, with the Korean automaker selling 1,80,237 units. This also increased the company’s share in the SUV segment to 25.45% from 22.71% in 2019. Hyundai said that the second-generation Creta was the best selling SUV in 2020 with 96,989 units sold. The Venue came in second with 82,428 units sold in 2020.

The Hyundai Kona Electric and the Tucson were the other minor contributors in helping Hyundai taking the lead with 223 and 597 units respectively. Following Hyundai, Kia Motors was the second-highest selling SUV brand with 1,35,295 units being sold last year. The Korean automaker shifted 96,932 units of the Seltos and 38,363 units of the recently launched Sonet. Mahindra came in third with 1,30,192 SUVs sold in 2020.

India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, surprisingly only came in fourth in the best selling SUV numbers. The Indian auto giant sold 98,939 SUVs in 2020 with their lineup of the Vitara Brezza and the S-Cross. The other Indian auto giant, Tata Motors came in fifth with 63,109 SUVs sold last year.

A point to note is that Hyundai’s SUV sales in India had a 5.1 % YoY growth while Kia registered a staggering 199% YoY growth. Mahindra, on the other hand, witnessed a 31.2% YoY sales decline in 2020. Maruti Suzuki’s sales dropped as well, registering a 32.15% YoY sales decline.
