Kia SP Gets One Step Closer To Its India Launch

The production model of the Kia SP (Trailster) will be launched in the second half of this year and is expected to closely resemble the SP Signature concept which was recently revealed well ahead of its launch. Since its official debut at the 2018 Auto Expo as a concept, the Kia SP SUV has attracted a lot of attention from the car community. The car has been spied testing many times in India and is likely get the name Trailster. In a recent development, the first Kia model for the Indian auto market will be officially revealed on June 20 this year, prior to its launch later this year.

In its overall design, a key difference between the Kia SP Signature Concept and the final production model which is the 19-inch alloy wheels in the former against the 17-inch alloy units in the latter can be realized. Besides that, the Kia SP Signature concept was remarkably different from the concept model first showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo and did a good job in giving us a preview of the Kia SP SUV which will be put on sale in India later this year.

Like the signature concept, the production-spec Kia SP is going to come with the bold ‘Tiger Nose’ grille design, sharp LED headlights and sleek horizontal LED fog lamps in the front. Other design highlights consist of a contrasting roof with integrated roof rails and floating roof design. At the rear, you will find a thick chrome garnish running across the truck, connected the sharp-looking tailllamps, aggresively-shaped rear diffuser and chrome exhaust finish.

The Kia SP’s cabin is expected to be well-equipped with a wide range of first-in-the-segment features. The equipment list will include a large touchscreen infotainment system, a 360-degree camera, built-in WIFI and wireless charging. A head-up display, a fully-digital instrument cluster and an ambient lighting package are also likely to be available in the top-of-the-line trim.

The Kia SP Signature Concept largely resembles the production model.

The Kia SP is expected to get 1.5-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel motors as options under the hood. Both engines are also likely to get the option of being mated to either a manual or automatic gearbox. Kia has been even reported to be developing a sportier variant of the SP, which will be powered by a 1.4-litre turbo petrol motor with 140bhp with a 7-speed DCT unit.

The Kia SP is expected to be priced in the range of INR 10 lakh – INR 16 lakh (ex-showroom) and once launched, will compete against the Nissan Kicks, the Hyundai Creta Renault and the Tata Harrier.
