The domestic automaker Mahindra & Mahindra has officially announced that it will launch an electric version of the forthcoming compact SUV (codenamed S201) in early 2020.

The home-grown automaker is accelerating to release a combustion-engine powered variant of the model (projected to be named XUV300) in the coming time. The XUV300 will be developed based on the Tivoli, but with a higher ground clearance and be equipped with thicker tyres and new styling in the front and rear.

In the meantime, it is also planning to launch an electric version of the S201 in the first quarter of 2020. The Mahindra S201 EV can travel for 250km per charge under the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle). It can reach a max speed of 150kph and accelerate from a standstill to 100kph in 11 seconds. The Tivoli EV is also included in Ssangyong's plan to expand its EVs’ line-up by 2020. The domestic carmaker also plans to launch three new EVs including the electric version of the KUV100, debuted at the Auto Expo 2018.

Although the Indian government has encouraged the use of zero-emission vehicles, their sales have considerably declined, from 2,000 units in FY2017 to 1,200 units in FY2018, as revealed by the Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV). Although the development of EVs in India is still in its initial stage, these figures are alarming enough to raise people’s awareness of EVs usage in the country where air pollution is a serious problem.

Commenting on the EVs sales, Goenka, managing director of Mahindra & Mahindra, stated that despite a 30% increase in EVs sales of the company (except for the e-rickshaws), he had expected a higher growth. He also added that the electric S201 and eKUV100 are going to be launched soon, which shows that everything is going in the correct direction, but a little bit more slowly than what the company had expected.

Along with the electric S201, the Mahindra eKUV100 is also part of the company's plan to expand its EVs lineup by 2020

With the upcoming launches of three new EVs, Mahindra & Mahindra is responding quite well to the call of the Indian government for EVs usage in the country. These three new EVs are expected to help the domestic company is reinforcing its position in the Indian EV segment in particular and the Indian auto market in general.
