Skoda To Launch MQB A0-based Sedan In 2021

Skoda Rapid is likely to be replaced by an all-new model which could be either the next-gen Rapid or another new model. It is confirmed to arrive by the end of 2021.

Skoda’s India-spec line-up includes mostly luxury models. The entry-level Skoda Rapid is the only model placed at the more affordable price range. It is Skoda’s only model to target the majority of buyers. However, this model has gone a long journey of 8 years without a comprehensive generation upgrade. It is likely that Skoda is considering to replace this ageing model with a fresh model soon by 2021.

The new model will be underpinned by the MQB A0 IN platform. It would be known as a next-gen Rapid or an all-new model to replace Rapid’s place. Either way, Skoda has confirmed that the new model will arrive by 2021, as confirmed by Zac Hollis, Head of Sales and Marketing, Skoda India.

The details of the new model are still kept under the wrap. However, we could expect to see this new vehicle to come with LED headlight and tail lamps, alloys wheels. Interiorly, it is likely to feature the MIB3 touchscreen system with Apple Carplay. Android Auto and eSIM. What’s more, it might also host a full-digital instrument cluster, power driver seat, and seven airbags.

As far as the powertrains are concerned, the new Skoda Rapid will come with a 1.0-litre TSI turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine as standard. For the higher performance, Skoda might offer the 1.5-litre TSI-Evo turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine as well. About the transmission, these engines are likely to come with a 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG.

There is a long way to go until the launch of the MQB A0 IN-based sedan. In the meanwhile, Skoda might possibly give the Rapid a facelift. The focus of the upcoming facelift is to upgrade the powertrain. The current engine of the 1.0-litre TSI turbocharged three-cylinder engine will receive changes to meet the upcoming BSVI emission norms. Alongside some small twists will also be added.
