Tata Motors has gained a majority of market share in the electric vehicle segment with the Tata Nexon EV. It is revealed that the homegrown car company is ready to electrify the new Tata Safari and upcoming Tata HBX as well.

At this point, there is no need to emphasize the importance of electric vehicles in the future of the automotive industry. In the global market, the electric vehicles segment has made impressive progress in the past few years. In India, there are a few car companies that have entered the EV space. However, the most successful attempt up to this point is the Tata Nexon EV. This SUV is currently holding 64% of market share in the electric vehicle segment. Besides the Tata Nexon EV, Tata Motors is also offering the EV version of the Tigor. In the future, Tata Motors is planning to introduce more EV models to the India market.

As per the latest interview, Shailesh Chandra, President, Passenger Vehicle Bussiness Unit, Tata Motors, shared that the brand is ready to get any vehicle of its line-up to go electric. It means that all of their vehicles even including the recently-launched Safari and upcoming HBX might be the next candidate to get electrified in the future. Moreover, the homegrown car manufacturer has been working on developing the electric version of the Tata Altroz hatchback. Tata Altroz EV is set to hit the market by the end of this year. By offering various EV vehicles in different segments, Tata Motors expects to extend the customer band in the future.

However, Shailesh Chandra did not give out any other detail about Tata Motors' future plans. That being said, it is quite clear that Tata Motors will not attempt to produce a car with electric powertrain only. Instead, all the upcoming electric vehicles will be based on existing ICE models (internal combustion engine). The carmaker’s OMEGA Arc and ALFA platforms are versatile enough to underpin both ICE and electric vehicles. These platforms allow Tata to electrify all the vehicle underpinned by them at ease.

As mentioned above, Tata Motors’ main offering in the electric segment is the Tata Nexon EV which is currently the best-selling electric SUV in the Indian market. The electric SUV is close to hitting the 3,000 unit sales milestone after being one year on sale. Another existing EV produced by Tata is the Tata Tigor EV. Initially, the electric sedan was limited to be used by the government only. Last year, Tata Motors started the production of the Tata Tigor EV for private buyers. Tata Tigor EV is priced from Rs 10.15 lakh to Rs 10.49 lakh. The upcoming Tata Altroz EV in India is currently at the development stage. It will be the first EV to be built on the ALFA platform. At launch, the electric premium hatchback will be the only offering of its kind in the market.

Coming up next, the brand will launch the Tata HBX by the end of this year. Also based on the ALFA platform, this model is likely to get an electrified version as well. If it is true, the electric HBX will hit the market sometime in 2022 or later. Even the recently launched Tata Safari is also a candidate to go electric in the future.
