After revealing the concept model at the Auto Expo 2020, Volkswagen India is gearing up for the launch of the new Volkswagen Taigun mid-size SUV which is expected to go on sale in early next year. The all-new VW Taigun might be the first vehicle to come based on the company’s India 2.0 strategy. The upcoming VW car will face the stiff competition from the hottest-selling mid-size SUVs in India like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Nissan Kicks and MG Hector, etc. Design-wise, the all-new VW Taigun draws heavy inspirations from the T-Cross. It boasts a lot of chrome treatments on the exterior to make it appealing enough to the Indian audiences.

The VW Taigun will be based on the heavily-localised MQB-IN-A0 platform to keep the costs of the car in check. The same architecture will underpin some upcoming models from VW Group like the Skoda Vision IN and the all-new Skoda Rapid.

The production-spec VW Taigun will look similar to the concept car showcased at the auto show, except for some minor visual updates. The mid-size SUV will get all-LED headlamps and taillamps for the higher-spec variants while lower-spec models come with halogens only.

The upcoming SUV will sport a range of features to make it a competent rival against the Creta and Seltos. There will be a multiple-layer dashboard layout that features an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, a fully-digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, a sunroof, cruise control among others. In terms of safety, the VW Taigun will likely receive standard safety kits like dual airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, rear parking camera, traction control and more.

Since Volkswagen has quitted the diesel route, we expect the all-new Taigun to get petrol engine option only. The company is yet to reveal the engine details of the Taigun but we expect the car to get a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine from the company’s TSI family. With a high level of localisation, the VW Taigun is slated to sit at around the Rs 10 lakh price point (estimated, ex-showroom). Further details will be updated on IndianAuto soon.
