All-new Hyundai i20 vs Maruti Baleno – Prices, Dimensions, Specs, Features

Hyundai i20 in its new-gen avatar has been recently launched in the country. Its chief rival 'Maruti Baleno', however, has turned quite old in the market now. But, how well do they fare against each other? Find out here.
Maruti Baleno is the best-selling car in its segment. The carmaker has recently announced the sales milestone of selling over 8 lakh units of the Baleno to date. Its key rival – Hyundai i20, however, has been launched in its new-gen avatar in the country. It starts at Rs. 6.78 lakh, whereas the Baleno is priced at Rs. 5.64 lakh. Interestingly, these cars share a massive price difference, but they cater to the same (Premium hatchback) segment. Beginning from the dimensions, the new-gen i20 and Baleno are identical in length. However, i20 is the wider and shorter car here by 30 mm and 7 mm, respectively. In terms of design, the new-gen i20 surely feels modern and upmarket than the Baleno. While the i20 adopts Hyundai’s new Sensuous Sportiness design theme, the Baleno too looks very Maruti-ish, but an aged one.

In terms of features, the all-new i20 is also the loaded one here. The Baleno too gets a long feature list, but i20 boasts of the longest one in the segment. It comes equipped with an electric sunroof, hill assist control, air purifier with Oximeter, 10.25-inch infotainment unit, Bose sound system, all-digital instrument cluster and more. The Baleno, on the other hand, comes with a 7-inch Smartplay Studio touchscreen infotainment unit. Features like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility and automatic climate control are offered on both of these hatchbacks.

As for the powertrain options, the i20 is offered with three engine options – 1.2L petrol, 1.0L turbo-petrol, and 1.5L diesel. The gearbox options on the all-new i20 include a 5-speed MT, CVT, 6-speed iMT, 6-speed AT, and 7-speed DCT. The Baleno, on the other hand, is offered two iterations of its 1.2L petrol motor – K12M and K12N (Dualjet). The Baleno can be had with either a 5-speed MT or a CVT. Moreover, the Baleno comes with an added option of a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.
