Being the current top-selling SUV in its segment, no wonder the Tata Harrier has a longer waiting period than both Mahindra XUV500 and Jeep Compass

The Indian SUV segment is developing at a rapid pace with new models being launched almost every month. In the coming time, two major SUV launches will take place in India: the Kia Seltos and the MG Hector, which will pose a threat to the other existing SUVs in the Indian auto market. Nevertheless, the current best-selling SUV in India is still the Tata Harrier, which guarantees it a longer waiting period than other SUVs.

The maximum waiting period for the Tata Harrier is three months in some cities like Patna, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Pune. In the meanwhile, the Mahindra XUV500 has a waiting time of up to 6 weeks while that for the Jeep Compass is 3 weeks. The length of the waiting period partially reflects the popularity of the SUVs in the Indian auto market.

The Tata Harrier has the longest waiting time because of its modern and intimidating design, top-notch features from the base trim along with an aggressive price. The Harrier is powered by only a 2.0-litre Multijet diesel motor with 148 BHP against 350 Nm. The transmission duties are undertaken by a 6-speed MT gearbox. At the moment, no petrol engine, no AT unit, no AWD system and no 7-seat version are available, but all of these will become a reality in the near future.

The SUV with the second longest waiting time is the Mahindra XUV500. Being one of the most popular SUVs in India, the Mahindra XUV500 is very well equipped with a wide range of premium features. More notably, the SUV comes with multiple engine and transmission options, which helps it hold a clear advantage over the other SUVs. Firstly, a 2.2-litre mHawk petrol serves as the power source for only the G variant. This engine is good for 138 BHP against 320 Nm and is coupled with a 6-speed AT unit. The second one is a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel motor which can produce 153 BHP against 360 Nm and comes mated to either a 6-speed MT or an AT gearbox.

The last one is the Jeep Compass. Deserving its highest price in the Indian SUV segment, the vehicle is packed with numerous unique features such as a panoramic sunroof, a DCT unit, etc. The SUV is powered by a 1.4-litre Multiair petrol motor which can produce 161 BHP against 250 Nm and is mated to a 7-speed DCT gearbox. Furthermore, there is also a 2.0-litre Multijet diesel motor which can deliver a 170 BHP against 350 Nm and is coupled with a 6-speed MT unit. The diesel AT version of the Jeep Compass will be introduced to the Indian auto market in the coming time.
