The Indian government is working on a new rule which would require vehicles older than 15 years to obtain a fitness certificate every 6 months

The Government of India is putting its best efforts to promote electric vehicles and is even looking out for ways to restrict the usage of old cars. Recently, this week, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway (MoRTH) has passed a new draft notice for making revisions to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. The main aim of this draft is to influence people towards the adoption of EVs and also to execute a systematic method for the trashing of worn-out vehicles. A report revealed by the Goodreturns suggests that the ministry has said that vehicles which are older than 15 years need to get a fitness certificate every six months. Moreover, the renewal cost for the vehicle health certificate should also seen an increment.

The main aim of the new draft is to push an early adoption of EVs and also to execute a systematic method for the scrapping of worn-out vehicles.

This means the Indian government will increase the fees for the fitness test required to check the road-worthiness of cars older than fifteen years. Also, the prices and rules for the vehicles which are less than 15 years old could go through some alterations. The draft also suggests that the cars up to eight-year-old need to renew their fitness certificate every 2 years. On the other hand, vehicles between 8 to 15 years in age need to get their fitness certificates renewed once a year. Moreover, this draft also suggests smart ways to scrap the older vehicles.

The draft prepared by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway says that, “The newly purchased Motor Vehicles of the categories …..shall be exempted for the payment of fees for the purpose of issue of registration certificate and assignment of new registration mark subject to condition that motor vehicle is presented for the registration along with the scrapping certificate of the previously owned vehicle of the same category issued by the authorized scrapping centre/agency and the scrapping certificate not utilized for any other such cases in past,”
