E-Trio company has recently confirmed to retrofit the WagonR and Maruti Alto and convert the two cars into fully electric vehicles which will be ready for a market launch.

E-Trio, the mobility startup which was based in Hyderabad, is claimed to be the pioneer in India market to successfully get the ARAI approval for retrofitting regular IC-engined cars with all-electric powertrain. Recently, the company has received an approval to convert Maruti Alto and WagonR into fully electric vehicles. As per report from the company, these retrofitted EVs comes with swift acceleration which can have a range of 150 kms on a single charge.

E-Trio schedules on the Indian-bound EV launching, in which, the initial production capacity is said to be 1,000 retrofitted cars per month. In the first phase of the plan, it sets to convert 5,000 conventional cars into electric ones in the first year of operation. Hence, the company has currently joined hands with an R&D team in San Francisco to further improve the electric kits as well as OEMs part.

According to E-Trio, the electric kit will include a battery pack and a motor. This equipment will be derived from South Korea and China. Meanwhile, E-Trio has also developed the controller by itself.  However, the technical specifications of the electric kit have not been revealed.

In the context that the government aims to boost the new electric and hybrid vehicles in India, retrofitting is absolutely a step in the right direction. As for the car owners, it is obviously economical to retrofit their existing car instead of trading for a new EV. As a result, for the environment, the burden of recycling as well as storing and recycling old cars could also be reduced.

Commenting about retrofitting the cars, Sathya Yalamanchili, the founder of E-Trio, has commented to the media,

“Retrofitting is the way to go and need of the hour and these smart cars currently are the most efficient and economical cars compared to our counterparts in the market. Our vision is to create e-Mobility which inspires and nurtures pollution free India. We believe that affordable range is the key to helping electro mobility achieve a breakthrough in the near future.”

In the next phase of the plan, E-Trio will work on the securing approval from ARAI to retrofit other popular best selling cars in India. Apart from transforming car models, the incentives and a comprehensive charging infrastructure network from the government is said to be a significant factor contributed to the large-scale success.
