Hyundai Santro is thought to be the end of the slow-selling Hyundai Eon. But according to source from Hyundai, it is unlikely to be true.

Hyundai Santro is just days away from its official launch. Details about this new car have been widely published. From what we know about the new Santro, it will be feature-rich and well-equipped with some first-in-the-segment tech. It seems that Hyundai has been invested a lot to this hatchback. And the words has it that the launch of the Santro will be the end for Hyundai Eon – another hatchback from Hyundai which doesn’t perform well in terms of sales volume. But is this true that Hyundai Eon will be replaced by the time Santro is out?

Hyundai Santro will be Hyundai's next small hatchback, which is expected to replace the Eon

According to the trusted source from Hyundai, the new 2019 Santro will not put an end to the Eon. Instead, the Eon is likely to get its updates in the next generation which is expected to arrive by 2021. And it will continue to be the Hyundai’s entry-level car. And Hyundai Santro, therefore, is likely to be positioned higher than the Eon.

Hyundai Eon was introduced in 2011, and this car is exclusively made for Indian customers. Ever since, the Eon was given some minor tweaks, but not so significant. If it is true that the Eon will not be ended by the launch of the Santro, the upcoming version of the Eon must come with comprehensive changes. The new Eon is likely to grow bigger in size. AMT is also expected to be offered in the new Eon as we have seen the AMT to appear in the new petrol Santro.

Besides the obvious exterior updates, Eon will also need to upgrade the features kit too. Due to the new safety norms, most of the upcoming cars need more advanced techs. Hyundai Eon’s safety features, therefore, will be packed with goodies like dual front airbags and ABS.

The ongoing version of the Eon is offered in two variants which is a 0.8-litre unit and a 1.0-litre unit. The smaller engine is able to make 56PS and 74.5Nm. For the bigger engine, the power output is 69PS and 94Nm. Both come with a 5-speed manual gearbox. In the updated version, Eon needs to upgrade its engines as well, in order to comply with the BSVI norms.

The launch date of the Eon is likely to be around mid-2020. And it will pit against other small hatchbacks like Maruti Alto 800, Maruti Alto K10, Datsun Redi-go and Renault Kwid.
