SUVs are now the most-sought-after body types in the car market. With its increasing popularity, the SUV segment has attracted a lot of attention from car brands. Having a good share in the SUV segment would guarantee a stable sales performance and promising future for carmakers. Kia is a good example. Being a new kid on the block, Kia has successfully established a strong presence in the SUV market mostly thanks to the mid-size SUV Kia Seltos and the sub-four-meter SUV Kia Sonet. Last year, it was estimated that Kia Motor has sold over 1.35 lakh units of SUVs in India, helping it become the second-largest SUV maker in our market.

In 2020, Hyundai is named as the largest SUV maker in India with 1.8 lakh SUV sold. Mahindra & Mahindra come as the third best-selling SUV manufacturer. Last year, Mahindra registered a total sales of 1.3 lakh in the SUV segment. It is worth to note that Mahindra’s portfolio mostly comprises of utility vehicles. On top of that, last year, Mahindra also had a huge success with the new-gen Mahindra Thar.
When combined, Hyundai and its subsidy company, Kia, clocked a total sales of 3 lakh SUV units in our market. This impressive figure has confirmed their superior positions in the SUV segment.
Both of the Kia Seltos and Kia Sonet has received overwhelming responses since its launch. While Kia Seltos was launched in 2019 and able to remain a high demand throughout the year, the Sonet has just made its debut in September 2020. In the first three months, the car registered a staggering sales number of 38,363 units. On average, Kia has sold around 365 units of the Kia Sonet a day. With such an impressive number, the Kia Sonet is also considered the fast-selling SUV in India.
Kia offers a wide range of variants for the Kia Sonet. There are over 20 variants of the Sonet available on sales at the moment. Moreover, the South Korean carmaker also provides various powertrain options. It gets three engine options, a 1.2 litre naturally aspirated petrol (82 BHP/114 Nm), a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol (118 BHP/172 Nm), and a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine (99 BHP/240 Nm for MT and 115 BHP/250 Nm for AT). The naturally aspirated petrol engine is mated to a 5-speed MT gearbox while the turbo-petrol engine comes with a 6-speed iMT option and a 7-speed DCT option. The diesel engine is available with either a 6-speed MT or a 6-speed torque converter AT unit.
This year, Hyundai-Kia alliance has prepared a couple of vehicles for the Indian customers in order to keep their vehicle range fresh and appealing. Hyundai is planning to launch a micro SUV codenamed AX1. On the other hand, Kia Motors is eyeing to expand its range in the MPV segment in early 2022. Currently, Kia has already presented in the MPV segment with the Kia Carnival. Priced from Rs 24.95 lakh, Kia Carnival is offered as a premium option in the segment and put up against the Toyota Innova Crysta.
