As the result of Mahindra and SsangYong's split, Mahindra is expected to axe its flagship car, the Mahindra Alturas G4 soon.
Some reports suggest that Mahindra might pull the plug of the Mahindra Alturas G4 in the following year. Launched in November 2018, Mahindra Alturas G4 is currently the flagship model on Mahindra’s line-up. Two years’ time is too short for a life cycle of a car model. However, the end of this car model is unavoidable due to the anticipated split between Mahindra & Mahindra and Ssangyong.
In the beginning, Mahindra Alturas G4 was introduced as the India-spec version of the Ssangyong Rexton which is currently on sale in select markets across the globe. At that point, Mahindra was still the major shareholder of the South Korean company. However, earlier this year, Mahindra made it clear that it is planning for an exit from Ssangyong. This latest development in Mahindra-SsangYong relationship also suggests at an imminent end of the Mahindra Alturas G4.
Mahindra is reported to have enough components and materials to build 500 units of the Alturas G4. After the materials run out, the production of the Alturas G4 will come to an end. Currently, the premium SUV is assembled at Mahindra’s plant as Completely Knocked Down units (CKD). Since mid-2019, the production of the Mahindra Alturas G4 was moved to the Mahindra’s plant in Chakan.
Earlier this year, Mahindra just launched the BSVI version of the Alturas G4. This SUV was powered by a BSVI-compliant 2.2-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine. This engine is powerful enough to churn out 181 BHP of top power and a 420 NM of maximum torque. It is mated to a 7-speed automatic gearbox. After receiving these updates, the powertrain of the Alturas G4 gets a slightly higher fuel mileage.
In terms of interior, the Mahindra Alturas G4 is fully-loaded right from the low-end variant. The standard equipment list includes some premium features like a large 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a powered driver seat, dual-zone climate control, tyre pressure monitor, rearview camera, front and rear parking sensor, as well as cruise control. On the top-spec model, Mahindra Alturas G4 can offer even more advanced features, for example, sunroof, ambient lighting, memory function for driver seat, powered tailgate, and a 360-degree camera.
As for the safety front, Mahindra Alturas G4 is offered with dual front airbags, ABS with EDB, electronic stability program, traction control, hill-star assist, hill-descent control, and rollover mitigation. Mahindra Alturas G4 is available in two variants, 2WD and 4WD. These two variants are priced at Rs 28.72 and 31.72 lakh respectively. It is now competing against the likes of Toyota Fortuner, MG Gloster, Ford Endeavour.
