Mahindra e20 Modified To Become The Fastest EV in India

While the Mahindra E20 has been discontinued in the Indian auto market, the hatchback is still owned by some people. Recently, a Mahindra e20 has been modified to become the fastest SUV in India.

Well-known for its expertise in modifying ICE-powered cars into electric ones, Northway Motorsport has created the fastest electric car in India. This comes as a surprise to electric car enthusiasts since when entry-level electric cars are concerned, the focus is usually on charging time and range. The company also has expertise in modifying electric cars to improve their range and speed. This time, an old Mahindra e20 has been utilized. The hatchback has been discontinued to give way to larger e20 Plus in 2016. The name of this modified car has also been changed to Mahindra e20 Type-R.

The Mahindra e20 Type-R is claimed to reach a top speed of 160 kmph, which is twice as high as that of the current Mahindra e20 Plus, which can reach 80 kmph. The e20 Type-R also defeats other electric cars in the country such as the Tata Tigor EV (80 kmph), Mahindra eVerito (86 kmph), Tata Nexon EV (120 kmph), MG ZS EV (140 kmph) and Hyundai Kona Electric (155 kmph), which makes this new car the fastest electric car in India.

The Mahindra e20 Type-R comes with a wide range of aesthetic upgrades such as a black mesh grille, attractive fluorescent yellow strips at the top of the front bumper and the grille. The interior updates include bucket system and a large floating infotainment system. Some important alterations in terms of the hardware consist of stretch fit low profile tyres, 6 pot brakes, adjustable suspension, drilled and slotted rotors and 9J forged wheels. The car has also been packed with Internet-connected smart features which can be controlled via an application or voice.

The e20 Type-R can deliver 750 Nm at wheels and comes with a 4-speed semi-automatic transmission. When the vehicle has been transformed for speed optimization, it still has a very competitive price of just INR 1 per kilometre. Most of the components are claimed to be taken within India. The new car complies with the OEM standards as regards the quality of fitment and parts.

Having said that, this modified car is non-commercial and has been implemented merely for development and research. Therefore, if you want your e20 modified in the same way, this is likely to be illegal to be run on road. The Mahindra e20 Type-R was tested on a private road in a controlled environment.
