3. Types of Driving Licence Issued by RTO Offices in Kolkata

Driving licence is one of the mandatory document that every driver must carry once they drive a vehicle on the public roads. The Kolkata RTO takes care of the issuance of a new driver’s licence in the city. Here are the different types of vehicles categorised for the issuance of new driving licence in Kolkata.

- Two-wheeler without gear: the licence is issued to the applicants who are above 18 to drive a two-wheeler vehicle without gear.

- Two-wheeler vehicles with gear: the M licence is issued to the drivers of motorcycles with gear, who are at the age of 18 or above.

- Light motor vehicles (LMV): LMV licence is issued to the applicants who are above 18 and drive any kind of vehicles such as cars, vans, jeeps and autorickshaws. LMV drivers don’t need a separate licence to use their vehicles for commercial purposes.

- Commercial vehicles: the licence types of commercial vehicles include MGV, HMV, HGMV, and HPMV/HTV. These licences are mainly for medium and heavy good carriage.

4. Types of Vehicle Registration Issued by RTO Offices in Kolkata

Having your vehicle registered with RTO offices in Kolkata is a process mandated for any new car purchase in the city. Basically, there are two types of vehicle registrations as follow:

- Temporary Vehicle Registration: a short-term vehicle registration that can be used in the initial 7 days after the date of purchasing. The registration can be extended up to 10 months as well but after this period, it is compulsory to get a permanent vehicle registration so that it can be legally driven in the public roads.

- Permanent Vehicle Registration: The permanent vehicle registration will be issued to the new vehicle’s owner and is mandatory for every vehicle in India. Driving a vehicle without a permanent vehicle registration (if the temporary registration has expired) will be subjected to a penalty or even imprisonment.
