Hyundai Ioniq EV Is The First Hyundai Electric Car To Come To India
Realizing the big potentialities of EVs in the Indian auto market, many automakers including Hyundai are planning to introduce new EVs with premium features in the market. Hyundai Motor India has announced that it is intending to introduce an electric vehicle in each of the segment it is now participating in and electrify all of its vehicles in 2030. The first electric vehicle of Hyundai to be released in India is the Hyundai Ioniq EV. Along with the Kona EV, this vehicle had been showcased at the Auto Expo 2018 and is coming to India in the near future. Although much has been discussed about the more well-known Hyundai Kona, a little has been talked about its sedan sibling, the Ioniq. 1. Hyundai Ioniq EV Launch Date
Hyundai has confirmed the launch of two new EVs: Ioniq and Kona for the Indian auto market. The Ioniq EV will come to India as a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) unit and then built at the Hyundai’s facility in Chennai. Although the Southern Korea car manufacturer has not made any revelation as to the launch date of this new EV in India, it is expected to be launched here in the first half of 2019, before the Hyundai Kona.

2. Hyundai Ioniq EV Exterior
Exterior features
Hyundai Ioniq EV will take the inspiration from Hyundai’s newest fluidic design philosophy. According to Hyundai, “Hyundai designers concentrated on its future-focused character, fundamental to its appeal. A fluid exterior shape and natural air flow channels emphasize aerodynamic body lines and surface volumes.”
In the front, the electric sedan is expected to come with an aggressive design with such features as a hexagonal grille, LED headlamps with LED DRLs.
On the side profile, the car will be equipped with power-operated sunroof, chrome-covered door handles, fashionable 16-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, which contribute to the vehicle’s elegant stance.
In the rear, the Ioniq will look sporty with a fastback-like design. It will come with a black sculpted bumper, air-scoops, a spoiler integrated with a tailgate, a wide green-house are and a Hyundai logo. All of these features will add to the premium image of the car on the road.

The Hyundai EV is 4,470mm long; 1,821mm wide and 1,450mm high with a 2,700mm wheelbase and a 350-litre boot which can be expanded to 1410 litres when the rear seats are completely folded.

Braking and safety features
The braking system of the Hyundai Ioniq will include disc brakes on all wheels with ABS. Moreover, the energy regeneration process will be implemented through braking.

4. Hyundai Ioniq EV Performance
Engine and transmission
On the international auto market, the Hyundai Ioniq EV is offered with three motor options: fully electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid; however, only the first engine option will come to India. It will be powered by a 28 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, which also provides power for the Hyundai Kona EV. This engine can deliver 88 kW or 118bhp of max power and 295Nm of peak torque. Transmission duties are to be taken by a 6-speed dual clutch unit. The Hyundai Ioniq EV can travel as much as 200km per a full charge and a fast charging option is also available. There is regenerative charging system on the Ioniq.

Handling and riding quality
The car offers you the freedom of driving mode selection between ECO mode and Sports mode, which, along with electric power steering, will guarantee a pleasant driving experience. The multi-link suspension in the rear with a low centre of gravity will offer stability for all the occupants, regardless of their positions in the car.
5. Hyundai Ioniq EV Price and Competition
Hyundai Ioniq EV will be locally assembled in India, which helps the Southern Korean automaker aggressively price it. Moreover, underpinned by the Hyundai’s emission-free platform, the Ioniq EV will be entitled to some schemes of the Indian government like NEMMP and FAME, which will offer the sedan with lower tax with a view to encouraging EVs in India. Thus, the Hyundai Ioniq EV is expected to be priced from Rs 35 lakh to Rs 40 lakh (ex-showroom). Once launched in India, it will compete against the Toyota Prius.
