The upcoming Hyundai AX1 will be competing against the likes of Maruti S-Presso and the production-spec Tata HBX once launched in our market

Hyundai is working on an all-new micro SUV that might become a worthy rival of the Maruti S-Presso in India. Internally called the Hyundai AX1, the upcoming Hyundai SUV has been spotted testing yet again. It’s worth a note that this isn’t the first time the AX1 micro-SUV was spotted, but these latest spy shots are much closer and reveal many new details about the upcoming vehicle.

The all-new AX1 will be among the upcoming affordable cars in India from Hyundai’s stablemates. It is believed to sit under the Hyundai Venue in the company’s product range. Our in-house digital illustrator has also rendered how the new AX1 could look like, which also give us some closeups of the model. Based on the rendering and the latest spy images, the upcoming Hyundai AX1 will sport a lot of squarish elements on its bodywork. Despite being heavily camouflaged, the AX1 seems to get a larger new mesh grille upfront. There’s a turn indicator strip sitting higher and the headlamps setup sits in lower in the bumper. The split headlamps appear to be similar to what we have in the Hyundai Venue.

As can be seen in the spy shots, the test mule uses halogen bulbs for the headlamps. We do expect Hyundai to offer turn indicator strip doubled up as the LED DRLs in the higher-spec models. Or else, we might at least have LED DRLs available as an official add-on just like what Maruti Suzuki has done with the S-Presso.

When looking at the side, we can clearly notice the tall boy design silhouette of the new micro-SUV. In order to keep the cost in check, Hyundai may offer the stylized wheel cover on the AX1 car. The windows are more squarish than earlier Hyundai cars. The rear door handles are distinctively placed between the rear window and the C-pillar, thereby giving us a sense of a two-door car. Similarly, we’ve seen the same rear door handles design on the Maruti Swift or Tata Altroz hatchback before.

While the interior of the Hyundai AX1 is yet to be disclosed, we assume it to boast of a dual-tone interior theme and some essential comfort goodies on tap. A good audio system on the base model and a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on the higher-spec models are something that we anticipate. Other features will include auto climate control, four power windows and many more.

Powering the upcoming Hyundai AX1 micro-SUV will be a 1.1-litre petrol engine derived from the Santro sibling. The power and torque output will be at 69 PS and 99 Nm, respectively. Likely, there will be a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol mill producing 83 PS of max power and 113 Nm of peak torque. Transmission choices for both the engines will comprise of a 5-speed MT or a 5-speed AMT for.
