Hyundai Venue, currently India’s most popular compact SUV, will get a more powerful diesel engine to increase consumer interest.

The compact SUV segment is one of the most hotly contested segments in India. You have a lot of brilliant choices in here, like Mahindra XUV300, Ford EcoSport, Tata Nexon, and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. Hyundai had launched its Venue a few months back, and it has already become the most selling sub-4-metre in the country, beating the previous champion Vitara Brezza in July sales. It is no surprise then that Hyundai has decided to give the Venue another engine option to keep the sales figures strong.

The current engine options for the Hyundai Venue include a 1.2-liter naturally aspirated 4-cyliner petrol with 83 hp and 115 Nm of torque, a 1.0-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder petrol with 120 hp and 172 Nm of torque, and a 1.4-liter turbo-diesel 4-cylinder engine with 90 hp and 220 Nm. As standard, the engines are mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, but the 3-cylinder turbo engine gets the option of a dual-clutch 7-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual. The Venue is expected to borrow the 1.5-liter diesel from the Kia Seltos, albeit in a lesser state of tune, to add to its roster.

Hyundai had previously confirmed that it will not be continuing with its existing diesel engines in the future as they are not BSVI compliant. The new 1.5-liter diesel engine is already BSVI compliant, but is expected to be less powerful than in the Seltos. In fact, it might skip on the variable-geometry turbocharger in favour of a regular fixed-geometry turbocharger. The latter is both cheaper and more fuel-efficient, which makes a lot of sense for the Indian market. Currently, the 1.5 diesel motor produces 113 hp and 250 Nm in the Seltos. These figures might go down to below 100 hp and 220 Nm in the Venue. Expect the new engine to debut early next year.
