The all-new Kia Sonet will share its underpinnings and engines with the Hyundai Venue sibling.

Kia Motors India has had a ‘dream’ start in the Indian auto market with its two maiden offerings- the Seltos mid-size SUV and Carnival MPV selling like hot cakes in India ever since they were launched. Kia’s third product for India, the Sonet, which marked its domestic showcase at Auto Expo 2020, albeit in the concept form, will come off as a decent competitor in the compact SUV segment. Now, it's being reported that the production-spec Kia Sonet will have its global premiere by sometime in mid-2020 with the market launch lined up for August.

Set to be the smallest offering in Kia’s SUV lineup, the upcoming Kia Sonet will ride in a sub-4m length and comply with the country’s small car regulations. Kia’s all-new compact SUV will share its underpinnings and basic mechanicals with its not-too-distant cousin, Hyundai Venue. However, the car will differentiate itself from the Venue sibling with a more muscular and proportional appearance along with some distinctive design elements.

As such, Kia Sonet will be powered by three powertrain options including a 1.2-litre petrol engine, a 1.5-litre diesel motor and a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit as seen under the bonnet of Hyundai Venue. Transmission options are expected to be the same as well, with the presence of 5-speed MT (for 1.2-litre petrol) and a 6-speed MT (1.0-litre turbo-petrol and 1.5-litre diesel).

Note that there will be an option of 7-speed DCT for the turbocharged engine too. Though, it is also expected that the diesel mill will come with a choice of 6-speed torque converter-based automatic transmission, giving the Sonet an edge over the Venue.

Besides, Kia Sonet will be fitted with a host of high-end features including Kia Seltos’s 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system along with a large sunroof among others.

There’s not a hint from the carmaker at the Kia Sonet’s pricing until now but we do expect the car to sit on the higher end of the compact SUV segment. The estimated prices of the Kia Sonet are in between Rs 7 – 12 Lakh bracket (ex-showroom). The upcoming Kia Sonet will take on the likes of Maruti Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, Ford Ecosport and Hyundai Venue in India.
