The Mahindra XUV300 petrol automatic is expected to be the most powerful SUV in its segment once launched in India this month.

The sub-four-metre SUV space is seeing the harsher competition which urges the manufactures to spice up their products to stay competitive in the country. In a similar fashion, Mahindra & Mahindra is doing just that to the XUV300.

Up until now, the Mahindra XUV300 is powered by a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine under the bonnet. The former is capable of kicking out 110 PS of max power and 200 Nm of peak torque while the oil burner can put out 117 PS against 300 Nm of torque. Both the engines come mated to a 6-speed MT as standard along with a 6-speed AT optional for the diesel burner only.

Apparently, the current Mahindra XUV300 gets quite a good set of engine and gearbox options. However, the only niggle people had with the baby-XUV is the absence of a petrol-automatic variant, the same has been offered by most of its competitors already. Therefore, it’s time for Mahindra to bring in a new optional automatic transmission for the XUV300’s 1.2-litre turbo-petrol version so as not to be lagged behind. We do expect the gearbox option to be a 6-speed torque converter unit.
