The current-gen Maruti S-Cross is available with a 1.3-litre diesel only. A BSVI-compliant 1.5-litre petrol engine with a mild-hybrid system is in the works.

In an effort to give the fairly popular Maruti S-Cross a new lease of life, Maruti Suzuki has been working on a 1.5-litre petrol version of S-Cross that is all set to be launched in the coming months. It has been almost two years since Maruti Suzuki introduced a facelifted S-Cross with a diesel powertrain engine option. Therefore, the new S-Cross 1.5-litre petrol configuration is set to fill the gap in the lineup and widen its the options for the customers.

Maruti Suzuki will launch a new 1.5-litre petrol-powered S-Cross with SHVS system in the run-up to the introduction of BSVI emission norms.

The petrol version of the S-Cross will source its power from the same 1.5-litre K15B unit that has already debuted in the new Ciaz and even powers the second-gen Ertiga. This mill is capable of making 105 hp of max power and 138 Nm of peak torque and works in tandem with a Smart Hybrid System featuring a dual battery setup. The transmission duties will be taken care of by a 5-speed manual gearbox and the tried-and-tested 4-speed automatic transmission. Also, Maruti Suzuki is reportedly working on a new diesel-powered version of S-Cross which will utilise the in-house developed E15A 1.5-litre diesel engine option.

The new Maruti S-Cross petrol model will go on sale during this calendar year, possibly in the second half of 2019.

Internationally, the S-Cross has been available with a range of petrol and diesel engine options- 1.0-litre turbo petrol, 1.4-litre turbo-petrol and a 1.6-litre diesel engine unit. However, the India-spec Maruti S-Cross uses a 1.3-litre oil burner only, which can put out 90 hp of power and 200 Nm of torque. In the near future, the all-new petrol-powered S-Cross will have to fare against the petrol variants of Hyundai Creta, Renault Captur and Nissan Kicks. The expected launch timeline is in the latter half of 2019.
