2020 Mahindra Thar Soft-Top Tested for Ease of Going Topless - VIDEO

Mahindra launched the much-awaited successor to the Thar, which is beloved and has gained a cult following in the off-roading community. The new Thar has already garnered over 30,000 bookings, with Mahindra not taking new ones till May 2021, and deliveries stretching to around 7 months currently. The new model aims to match or surpass the previous one in off-roading capabilities but also adds on-road refinement and creature comforts that the old one could only dream of. The old Thar could be had with only a simple soft-top, if you wanted a hardtop you had to go the aftermarket route. Mahindra has learned from it and now it offers the 2020 Thar in both hardtop and soft top versions. The latter comes with a new easy-to-use manual convertible function.

We came across this video uploaded by DCV on YouTube that test the time taken to open the soft top and get it back up for the new Mahindra Thar. The opening procedure starts with removing the two rear window screens, after which both doors are opened to unhook the latches that keep it pinned to the windscreen. After that, it’s a simple job to push it all the back till it sits flush with the boot. Setting it back up is easy as you just need to reverse the steps but it will take a fair bit longer to set all the things right. You have to make sure all the latches are in the right orientation as it won’t be tethered properly to the vehicle otherwise. The waterproof rear window screens take the longest as it has two latches which need to be connected tightly. Overall, the process took around 7 minutes in the video, your time may vary and should come down once you are used to the mechanism. 

The all-new Mahindra Thar now comes with 2 engine options, a 2.2 litre turbo-diesel, and a 2.0 litre turbo-petrol. The oil-burner makes 130 Ps and 320Nm of peak power and torque figures while the petrol makes 150 Ps and 320 Nm of max power and torque. You get two transmission options for both the powertrains, A 6-speed manual, and a 6-speed automatic with a low range box. You also get a transfer case and a mechanically locking centre differential for pukka off-roading. Prices for the Mahindra Thar range between Rs 9.80 lakh – Rs 13.75 lakh, ex-showroom.
