The SUV segment has attracted great attention from Indian car buyers. Here is the list of the best-selling SUV makers in the Indian market.
The SUV segment has seen incredible growth in the car industry in the past few years. The growing trend emerges in both the international market and in the domestic market. In India, the SUV segment is expanding at such a rapid speed that almost every carmaker in the market has at least one SUV in their vehicle line-ups. Even though the competition in this segment is high, it will not hold the car brands from plunging into the SUV category. There is always a good number of new models lining up to enter the SUV segment.
Let’s have a look back to see what car brands were dominating this key segment in 2020.
Maruti Suzuki remains to be the biggest car manufacturer in the Indian market. However, as far as the SUVs are concerned, Hyundai is still the number one car brand. While Maruti Suzuki’s line-up relies mostly on the budget, small cars, Hyundai’s strength is its strong presence in the SUV segment with a variety of hot-selling models.
According to the sales report, last year, Hyundai sold more than 1.8 lakh units of SUVs in India. Interestingly, the segment-leading Hyundai Creta accounted for over 50 percent of the Hyundai’s total sales in the SUV segment. In 2020, the Creta clocked a total sales of 97,000 units.
Besides the Hyundai Creta, Hyundai also received a good number of sales from the Hyundai Venue. Last year, Hyundai Venue registered a total sales of 82,000 units. The Venue and Creta are two models that carry Hyundai’s SUV line-up.
Other two SUV cars of the Hyundai are the Tucson and Kona EV. However, the sales of the premium SUV and the electric SUV are minor compared to the hot-selling Creta and Venue.
Kia Motors entered the Indian market in 2019 with the Kia Seltos. In 2020, Kia has emerged as a force to reckon with. With the success of the Kia Setlos, the South Korean car manufacturer has established a good reputation among Indian customers. After the Kia Sonet, Kia has kept going by launching the Kia Sonet in the mid-size SUV segment.
With only two vehicles in the SUV segment, Kia was able to generate a whopping sales of over 1,35,000 units in the SUV segment. Kia Seltos contributed to the majority of this number with 97,000 units sold in 2020. Kia Sonet was on sales for just three months. However, it still managed to accumulate a total sales of 38,000 units.
Mahindra is well-known for its range of SUVs. Over the years, Mahindra has developed a line-up of competent SUV models for the domestic market. Some of these models even made it to the foreign markets. However, last year, Mahindra has lost to the newer car brand, Kia Motor, and humbly come third on the list of the best-selling SUV maker in India with 1,30,000 units sold in 2020.
Mahindra has a strong focus on the SUV segment with various SUV offers
The key models on Mahindra’s line-up that contribute largely to its total SUV sales are XUV300, Bolero, Scorpio, TUV300, KUV100 and XUV500. Lately, Mahindra has launched the Thar which has later become an instant hit in the market. Last month, Mahindra registered 6,500 bookings just for the Mahindra Thar. Moreover, this year, Mahindra is planning to launch the new XUV500 and the new-gen Scorpio. These new models are expected to push the sales of the Mahindra forward.
As mentioned above, Maruti Suzuki’s main focus lies on the small cars segment. Even though the SUV is showing huge potential, Maruti Suzuki is currently offering only one proper SUV, which is the Maruti Vitara Brezza. The good news is that Maruti Vitara Brezza remains its top-selling position in the sub-four-meter SUV segment. In 2020, the Maruti Suzuki sold 99,000 units of SUVs. It is expected that after Maruti Suzuki brings back the diesel engine, there will be a growth in sales for the Brezza. Previously, the Brezza was offered as a diesel-powered only model.
Tata Motors has seen significant growth in overall sales last year. This growing trend has also reflected through the increase in SUV sales. Tata is offering some popular SUV models like Nexon and Harrier. Last year, Tata Motors sold 63,000 SUV units in 2020. In the future, Tata is about to launch a 7-seater Safari and Tata HBX (Hornbill). These upcoming models are expected to create some positive impacts on Tata’s sales performance.
