Apart from safety, there are a lot of reasons to buy a Tata Nexon. It gets two engine options, a petrol and a diesel. The petrol is a 1.2-litre Revotron engine with 120 PS and 170 Nm on tap, while the diesel is a 1.5-litre Revotorq motor with 110 PS and 260 Nm. Both engines are available with an automatic gearbox option. The Nexon utilizes an AMT or Automated Manual Gearbox. It also looks very pretty on the outside, has a lot of space on the inside, along with a decent number of features as well. The quality of plastics could have been better, but at this price point, you couldn’t really ask for more!

Maruti Suzuki is the largest manufacturer in India, and for good reason! The company has perfected the art of giving customers what they want (read “good mileage”) at a reasonable price. It only has a single engine option, and that too a small 1.5-litre petrol motor. It marks the discontinuation of the outgoing Fiat MultiJet diesel that had been in service for more than a decade in Maruti Suzuki cars. The new mill is smooth, reliable, and extremely fuel-efficient. It makes 103 Bhp and 138 Nm of torque, good enough numbers for a city car.

For customers who need an extra layer of convenience added to the package, the Brezza comes with a 4-speed AT that you get a great little car for city commutes.

SX Plus Turbo DCT

₹ 1149 Lakh

SX Plus Sport DCT ₹ 11.66 Lakh

Hyundai Venue is the newcomer in this segment, but boy has it made a mark! The Venue has already beaten Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza in monthly sales, becoming the most selling compact SUV in India right now. It is also India’s first connected car, offering premium connectivity features and internet-based services not found in its competitors.

The Venue offers an optional dual-clutch transmission, or DCT, with its 1.0-litre turbocharged engine. This 3-cylinder mill is good for 120 Bhp and 175 Nm of torque. This engine gearbox combo lends the Venue very brisk performance, making it extremely fun to drive. The only complaint could be that the gearbox doesn’t shift as quickly as a DCT should, taking more than a second to slot into a gear. Still, it is smoother and faster than an AMT gearbox!

1.5 Petrol Titanium Plus AT

Ford EcoSport was one of the first compact SUVs to be launched in India, and it has been instrumental in turning this niche into the most hotly contested segment in the market. Ford offers you a conventional Torque converter Automatic transmission, paired to a brilliant naturally aspirated 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine. This conventional AT works brilliantly in city condition, and is also smoother in operations than a DCT or AMT, although it's not as fast as a DCT, nor is it as cheap as an AMT.

The EcoSport is also the most fun to drive amongst all the compact SUVs in the market, owing to its brilliant steering feel, stiff yet comfortable suspension, and most importantly, the high revving naturally aspirated engine. If you love driving, then you will love the EcoSport! What’s more, you also get paddle shifters behind the steering wheel to shift gears (optional in Titanium Plus), just in case you want to indulge the 10-year old in you!

Based on the SsangYong Tivoli and designed by Pininfarina, the XUV300 perhaps is the hottest looking Mahindra SUV currently available in the market. The cheetah-inspired looks are menacing and give this vehicle an unparalleled road presence. It also offers a lot of premium features you don’t find in budget cars, like seven-airbags, heated side mirrors, dual-zone climate control, etc.

The XUV300 offers you an AMT, just like in the Vitara Brezza and Nexon. The XUV, however, gets a more powerful 1.5-litre engine to power it. Max power figure is 115 Bhp, and max torque figure is a mind-blowing 300Nm. The XUV blows all the other compact SUVs out of the park in terms of drivability. The power delivery is so meaty that you won’t ever notice that the gearbox lacks gusto and is quite slow to respond, just like other AMTs.
