A Tata dealer charges a customer an extra amount over the actual road tax paid to MoRTH. The consumer confronts the dealer and gets the refund. Read to know more about the incident.
Car manufacturers only list the ex-showroom prices of their offerings but when a customer buys a car, he/she needs to pay the on-road price of the vehicle. The on-road price comprises of the ex-showroom price of the vehicle, plus the insurance premium, pollution certificate fee, smart card fee, and lastly, the road tax. While all other constituents are fairly similar and fixed, the value of road tax depends upon a lot of factors and different RTO offices, and consumers are not generally aware of them. Thus, car dealers are often seen using this blind spot to make some extra money. Something similar happened with a Tata Nexon owner, who made his purchase from Sagar Motors, Noida.
The dealer charged a sum of Rs. 68,200 from the buyer in the name of road tax, whereas the buyer only received a confirmation message of Rs. 63,700 from MoRTH as the final sum that was paid as road tax for his vehicle. However, the buyer of the Nexon confronted the dealer and got a refund for the extra amount that was charged in the wake of the road tax and registration fee. This is a fairly common practice as dealers know that most people are not concerned about the SMS or the price difference, and can easily be fooled in the name of other miscellaneous charges.
Also, sometimes dealers tend to give their own contact numbers so that the message is not received by the buyer. The other most common way of charging an extra price over the car’s ex-showroom price is the handling charge. According to the Supreme Court of India, the handling charge is not payable by the consumer. As the dealer is selling the vehicle, it is his/her duty to stock and handles the vehicle inventory, and the consumer should not be liable to pay for these efforts. However, some dealers are trying to by-pass this ruling by renaming handling charges as 'depot fee'.
Talking of the Tata Nexon, it is a sub-4m compact SUV that competes against the likes of Hyundai Venue, Maruti Vitara Brezza, and more. It comes with 2 engine options – 1.2L turbo-petrol and 1.5L turbo-diesel. The former produces a peak power and torque output of 120 PS and 170 Nm, respectively. The latter, on the other hand, is good to push out 110 PS of max power and 260 Nm of peak torque. The transmission options available on the Nexon are 6-speed MT and 6-speed AMT.
