For those who are not in the known, Genesis is a luxury car brand of Hyundai. It is the equivalent of Lexus of Toyota. Hyundai has just started this luxury division in 2017 with two models, the G80 SUV and G90 sedan. Up to this point, the G80 SUV has not yet entered any crash test yet, therefore, we have no official safety rating for this particular model. That being said, the SUV model has received certain recognition regarding its safety. Previously, both the G80 and G90 gained the Top Safety Pick+ award while most of the vehicle on Hyundai’s range only receive Top Safety Pick awards.

In terms of safety, the Genesis GV80 is fully-armed with a long list of features and technologies. Besides the standard front, front side and full-length side curtain airbags, the GV80 also provides driver knee, front centre and second-row side airbags, which is not common even in the luxury segment. To enhance safety, the GV80 is also fitted with stability control and antilock brake systems with brake assist. Other driver assistance technologies include lane-departure assist, lane-keeping assist, evasive steering assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and driver inattention warning.

About the car crash involving the Genesis GV80, we have yet got access to the full report provided by the authority. However, sources reported that Woods was driving at a “relatively greater speed than normal” while running down the hill. It is also noted that this part of the road is quite dangerous and has a “high frequency of accident”. While inspecting the car accident scene, the police found neither skid marks nor sign of braking, suggesting that Woods did not attempt to engage the brake system at the time of the car crash. It also means that all the braking safety features were not employed. The GV80 crashed the centre divider a curb and trees before rolling over.
