Mahindra Thar 700 has been officially launched at a price of Rs. 9.99 lakh. This model comes with higher safety features than the regular version

Mahindra Thar 700, previously known as the Thar Signature Edition, is finally launched. This special edition will mark the transition from the first generation of the Thar to the next generation. It is officially dubbed as Thar 700 as only 700 units of this commemorative model will be manufactured. It will go on sales at the starting price of Rs. 9.99 lakh, which is Rs 50,000 higher than the existing entry-level Thar CRDe 4WD.

Mahindra Thar 700 will go on sale in two exterior colours at the starting price of Rs. 9.99 lakh

As the leaked brochure suggested, Mahindra Thar 700 will be available with two exterior colours only – Napoli Black and Aqua Marine. The Thar 700 will carry forward the five-spoke 15-inch alloy wheels seen on the old Scorpio and Marksman. Besides, this edition will also get some minor exterior twists including the black decals on the hood and silver accent on the front bumper. One distinctive feature of the Thar 700 is the new special badge with the signature of Anand Mahindra, Chairman of Mahindra Group, on the fender. On the other hand, the interior of the Thar 700 stays mostly unchanged apart from the new leatherette seat cover.

Under the hood, Mahindra Thar 700 comes with the same 2.5-litre CRDe engine. The transmission duty is done by a 5-speed manual gearbox. This engine could churn out the maximum power of 105 BHP and 247 Nm of peak torque. To meet the new safety norms, the Thar 700 will be equipped with ABS. Unfortunately, it seems to be the only mechanical update on the Thar 700. It lacks parking sensor, driver airbags, passenger seat belt warning to strictly comply with the new standard that is going to kicks off on July 1, 2019.

In the meanwhile, Mahindra is working on the second-generation Thar which is expected to go on sale next year. Ahead of its launch, it is likely to make the debut at the Auto Expo 2020 in February. The next-gen Thar will get the BSVI-compliant diesel engine.
