Maruti Suzuki will launch their first electric car, the WagonR EV next year. It is reported that Maruti Ertiga EV will be the next electric vehicle from Maruti

Recently, Hyundai had its first shot at the electric vehicle segment with the all-electric SUV Kona. Apart from Hyundai, other manufacturers are also gearing up to introducing their own electric cars. One such carmaker is Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker. Maruti will launch the WagonR EV as its first electric vehicle for the Indian market. According to a recent report, Maruti will not stop at just one EV. In fact, Maruti Suzuki is planning on introducing a couple of EV models in the upcoming years. After the electric WagonR EV, Maruti is expected to work on electrifying the Ertiga.

The electric version of Maruti Ertiga might come with different dimensions than its ICE counterpart. It is still a bit too soon to tell anything about the new EV as Maruti hasn’t confirmed any information regarding the launch of any new electric car yet. But if the Maruti Ertiga EV is passed, this EV is likely to rival the upcoming MG e-ZS which will go on sale by the end of 2019. Even though the two models are of two different body types, similar pricing will lead to certain competition among the two.

EVs have been present in the India market for at least a decade. However, there wasn’t any electric vehicle that could offer decent performance and a practical range for everyday driving. But things will change soon. The government is opening the door for mass production of high-range EVs by introducing favourable policies and incentives for EV manufacturing. To encourage the EV segment, the government introduced an income tax refund for EV customers and custom duty exemption on imported lithium-ion cells. The launch of Hyundai Kona marks the beginning of a new era of electric vehicles. After the Kona, we will welcome various all-new zero-emission models from different manufacturers, including the MG-eZS, Tata Altroz, and Nissan Leaf.

In the meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki will launch the six-seater version of the Maruti Ertiga next month. This new version will come with updated and more premium features than the ongoing model. The interior of the six-seater will also be substantially different. However, it will keep similar engineering as on the current Ertiga.
