Our Maruti XL6 vs Maruti Ertiga comparison review highlights the differences and similarities between the two models in terms of their prices, specs, design, dimensions.

1. Maruti XL6 vs Maruti Ertiga: An Introduction

After months of testing and teasing, Maruti Suzuki finally introduced its new six-seater MPV, the XL6 to the Indian car market at the starting price of Rs 9.8 Lakh to Rs 11.46 Lakh (ex-showroom). The new Maruti XL6 commands an approximate premium of Rs 70,000 over its donor car, the Maruti Ertiga, then it is positioned as a more premium offering than the model which it is based on. To differentiate its two MPVs, Maruti Suzuki sells the standard Ertiga via its Arena dealerships while the new XL6 is retailed through the NEXA outlets.

As far as we know, the Maruti Ertiga is currently the most sought-after MPV in its segment. So a question is, whether the new Maruti XL6 is able to follow the success of the Ertiga in the space? If you are planning to buy a Maruti’s MPV, will you go straight to Arena showrooms or head to NEXA dealerships? IndianAuto now gives you a detailed Maruti XL6 Vs Maruti Ertiga comparison to help you find out which of the two would make sense for you.

2. Maruti XL6 vs Maruti Ertiga Dimensions: Which Is Bigger?

Being a premium version of the Ertiga, the new Maruti XL6 is bigger than the Ertiga MPV by quite a margin. Check out the dimensions of the Ertiga vs XL6 in the table below:

Maruti XL6 Vs Maruti Ertiga - Dimensions
 Dimensions  Maruti XL6  Maruti Ertiga
 Length  4445 mm  4395 mm
 Width  1775 mm  1735 mm
 Height  1700 mm  1690 mm
 Wheelbase  2740 mm  2740 mm
Ground Clearance  180 mm  180 mm
Kerb Weight  1180-1190 kg  1135-1235 kg
 Boot Space  209 - 692 litres  209 - 803 litres
 Tyre Size  185/65 R15  185/65 R15

While both MPVs measure around 4.5-metre length mark, the new XL6 is still marginally larger than the Ertiga, on which it is based. Measuring 4,445 mm long, 1,775 mm wide and 1,700 mm high, the Maruti XL6 is longer, wider and taller than the Ertiga by 50 mm, 40 mm and 10 mm, respectively. Or in other words, the Ertiga MPV measures the length of 4,395 mm, the width of 1,690 mm and the height of 1,735 mm. Note that both MPVs share the same wheelbase of 2,740 mm and the same ground clearance of 180 mm.

The XL6 gets a boot capacity of 209 litres which can be expanded up to 692 litres with the second row and third row folded. Whereas, the boot space of the Ertiga also stands at 209 litres with all rows up. However, it can be increased up to 803 litres when the second and third-row folded down. Basically, there is no clear winner of this part of our Maruti XL6 Vs Maruti Ertiga comparison. On paper, the XL6 is bigger but that is only because of the cosmetic updates carry and the slightly higher dimensions hardly make a difference in any form.

3. Maruti XL6 vs Maruti Ertiga Design: Which Is Better Looking?

Exterior Comparison

The all-new Maruti Suzuki XL6 boasts a batch of cosmetic changes as compared to the Maruti Ertiga. In a bid to garner a set of higher-budget buyers in the Indian auto space, Maruti Suzuki gives the XL6 a more premium appeal as compared to the Ertiga sibling. At the front, the hexagonal upper grille with two chrome slats that connect two sharper headlamps looks completely unique. The bumper is chunkier, the front fog lamps are repositioned while the faux skid plate is added to enhance the aggression and sportiness of the vehicle.

Unlike the Maruti Ertiga which uses the halogen headlamps, the XL6 gets multi-reflector LED headlights with LED daytime running lights instead. The side profile of the Maruti XL6 is kitted out with all-black alloys, silver roof rails and blacked-out ORVMs, black cladding on the lower body. The rear end of the new MPV turns out to be identical to the Ertiga at first glance. However, it receives a refreshed bumper, faux skid plates along with a vertical reflector. Above all, the Maruti XL6 looks more rugged and aggressive than the Ertiga which looks rather basic and utilitarian. Maruti Suzuki has given the XL6 a handful of eye-catching features on the outside that redefine the premium of the car over its donor car. Design is a matter of personal choice but if you ask us, it's the new model that wins this part of our Maruti XL6 Vs Maruti Ertiga comparison review.

Interior Comparison

In comparison with the dual-tone dashboard of the Maruti Ertiga, the XL6 gets all-black dashboard design, which, once again, adds to the premium quotient of the new model. The dashboard layout of the MPVs is the same, though. That said, both cars are available with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system (SmartPlay Studio unit on the XL6) with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and smartphone connectivity. Some other shared features of the two models include steering mounted audio controls, auto temperature control, rear defogger and power-adjustable ORVMs. Note that the latest feature in the XL6 gets auto fold/ unfold functions upon lock/unlock.

Though the cars are equally equipped with some basic features, the Maruti XL6 is given a host of more modern bits such as cruise control, captain seats on the middle row as against Ertiga’s bench seats, reclining function for the third rows, black leather upholstery as compared to Ertiga’s lighter beige fabric seats. While the Maruti Ertiga is offered with a seven-seater setup, the Maruti XL6 comes with 6-seater configuration.

On the safety front, both the Ertiga and the XL6 are equipped with enough essential features such as anti-lock braking system, electronic brake-force distribution, ISOFIX child seat anchorage, ESP, rear parking sensors, rear parking camera and more.

5. Maruti XL6 vs Maruti Ertiga Engine Specifications: Which Is Better In Terms Of Performance?

While the Maruti Ertiga is currently available with both petrol and diesel engine options, the XL6 gets the power from only one petrol mill in its heart. Powering the seven-seater Ertiga MPV is a BSVI-compliant 1.5-litre K15B gasoline engine which works in tandem with a Smart Hybrid tech and churns out 105 HP/ 138 Nm. There’s another 1.5-litre E15A turbocharged diesel mill that produces 95 HP/ 225 Nm on offer. While the former comes mated to either a 5-speed manual gearbox or the 4-speed torque converter, the diesel engine comes coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission only.

Maruti XL6 Vs Maruti Ertiga - Engines and Gearboxes
Petrol Engines  Maruti XL6  Maruti Ertiga

 Displacement  1462 cc  1462 cc
 Max Power  105 HP @ 6,000 rpm  105 HP @ 6,000 rpm
 Max Torque  138 Nm @ 4,400 rpm  138 Nm @ 4,400 rpm
 Gearbox  5-speed MT/ 4-speed torque converter  5-speed MT/ 4-speed torque converter
 Fuel Mileage  19.01 kmpl/ 17.99 kmpl  19.01 kmpl/ 17.99 kmpl
Diesel Engines  Maruti XL6  Maruti Ertiga
 Engine Type  -  4-cyl, turbocharged
 Displacement  -  1498 cc
 Max Power  -  95 HP @ 4,000 rpm
 Max Torque  -  225 Nm @ 1,500 - 2,500 rpm
 Gearbox  -  6-speed MT
 Fuel Mileage  -  24.2 kmpl

The Maruti XL6 borrows the same 1.5-litre petrol engine from the Ertiga to use under the bonnet. This engine also does the same duty on the Maruti Ciaz. It should be noted that the top-spec Maruti Ertiga is not equipped with an automatic transmission while both variants of the XL6 already has this option. Due to Maruti Suzuki’s plan to discontinue all diesel cars post BSVI deadline, the new XL6 is the only MPV that enters the market sans an oil burner under the bonnet. That’s would be a bit letdown for some who aspire to buy a diesel-powered MPV model. In terms of fuel efficiency, the XL6 and Ertiga share the same figures of 19.01 kmpl (for the manual version) and a 17.99 kmpl (for the automatic counterpart). While the XL6 and the Ertiga share the petrol engine, it's only the latter that is available with a diesel engine option. Hence, it's the older car here that wins this part of our Maruti XL6 Vs Maruti Ertiga comparison.
