Renault is gearing up for the arrival of the Renault Triber which is set to slash the dominance of the Maruti Ertiga 2018 in the MPV segment. How the upcoming Renault Triber compares with the like of Maruti Ertiga in the market? We'll find out.

1. Renault Triber vs Maruti Ertiga: Introduction

Renault has introduced its all-new MPV for the Indian market, the Renault Triber. After launched, the brand new Renault Triber has to fight tooth and nails with the segment leader, Maruti Ertiga MPV in the Indian car space.

India has been a very dynamic market with a number of unique India-only segments like the sub-four-metre SUV and sub-four-metre sedan which are scoring better than the conventional cars in terms of sales performance. And the new Triber comes to clear the way for the one-of-a-kind sub-four-metre MPV segment. The all-new Triber is a micro MPV claimed to be best enough to undercut the full-fledged MPV models in the segment. Being rich in features and generous in space, the sub-four-metre Triber MPV is surely a go-to option for those who are in need of a traditional MPV but having a tight budget. That's the reason why the Triber becomes the second largest-selling MPV in India in the past months, right behind the Maruti Ertiga.

Maruti Suzuki hardly needs an introduction and neither does Maruti Ertiga. IndianAuto knows that many of you are questioning whether the new Triber is worth considering instead of the largest-selling MPV from the India-Japanese car giant. Should you take time to jump to the Renault Triber showrooms or go straight to get a Maruti Ertiga, a micro or a full-fledged one? Read our Renault Triber vs Maruti Ertiga comparison to make your best decision.

2. Renault Triber vs Maruti Ertiga Dimensions: Which Is Bigger?

It comes as no surprise: the full-fledged Maruti Ertiga is bigger than the Renault Triber compact MPV in most of the dimensions. The Maruti Ertiga offers 4395 mm in length, 1735 mm in width, 1690 mm in height along with the wheelbase of 2740 mm.  From these, the Triber is significantly shorter than the Maruti car by 405 mm in length and 47 mm in height and gets a 104 mm shorter in the wheelbase as compared to its rival. Interestingly, the micro MPV is slightly wider than the Ertiga by 4 mm.

During the course of the Renault Triber’s official unveiling, the all-new Renault car has grabbed a whole bunch of attention from the press and the public for its unique sizes it has on offer. The new Triber is the first MPV in India to sit with the length of under the four-metre mark. The Renault MPV measures 3,990 mm long, 1,739 mm wide and 1,643 mm high along with the wheelbase of 2,636 mm.

Quite clearly, the Renault Triber gets a smaller boot space of 84 litres as against 209 litres of the Ertiga (with 7-seater setup). With the second and third-row seats folded down, the Triber offers 625 litres of luggage bay while the Ertiga offers 803 litres of storage capacity. Both cars have a seating capacity of 7 people. It's clear from this part of our Renault Triber Vs Maruti Ertiga comparison that the upcoming low-cost MPV is no match for the Ertiga but then, let's not forget the cost advantage the new model would hold over the larger model.

2. Renault Triber vs Maruti Ertiga Design: Which is better looking?

Exterior Comparison

The Triber is developed on a new architecture derived from the CMFA platform that also underpins the entry-level Renault Kwid hatchback. The first thing emerged on our mind when looking at the Renault Triber is that it bears a resemblance to the Renault Kwid which it is built on. But thanks to the latest design language, the Triber looks very pretty and impressive in its compact size.

The exterior of the Triber features chrome grille up front with the iconic big Renault logo standing at the centre like other Renault models. The headlights are projector units which are flanked by the grille with the LED daytime running lights sitting right below. The character lines on the hood give the new Renault MPV a more premium appeal. Particularly, the Renault Triber is also kitted out with some SUV design cues comprising roof rails, scuff plates and claddings around the wheel arches. At the back, the MPV gets wraparound taillights, small rear spoiler and a tailgate-mounted Triber branding.

The Maruti Ertiga, on the other hand, comes with a more premium aggressive look. Based on the company’s latest HEARTECT platform, the Ertiga is much stronger yet lighter than its previous-gen model. The Maruti Ertiga exterior sports some amazing sharp angles and curves, giving the new Ertiga a higher sense of sportiness. Like the Triber, the Maruti Ertiga is also offered with projector headlamps and LED DRLs but in the different styles. The slopping bonnet of the bigger MPV also gets character lines, giving the Ertiga a more sculpted look. The side profile of the Maruti Ertiga features tornado line connecting two doors, and character lines stretching from the front quarter until the L-shaped tail lamps at the back.

Renault Triber Compact MPV Unveiled - Quick Walkaround Video

Having said, the overall design of each car seems to have a different intention. The Maruti Ertiga is a traditional small-size MPV with chunkier silhouette and aggressive look while the all-new Renault Triber is a compact MPV with the crossover-ish stance. Which one you like better is purely subjective. Hence, there's no clear winner of this part of our Renault Triber vs Maruti Ertiga comparison.

Interior Comparison

The Renault Triber features a modern interior design which can be realised right at first sight. The Triber comes with a completely new design with a dual-tone beige and black interior theme, fresh dashboard layout and the black-beige fabric upholstery.

The 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system stands out in the dash which also gets dual-tone treatment and is finished in metallic. Good quality materials are adopted all around that raises the premium upmarket feel of the interior.

Whereas, the Maruti Ertiga tends to be more functional rather than gorgeous. The Ertiga comes with a sculpted dashboard with artificial wooden trims as well as high-quality materials and chrome accents. The leather-wrapped steering looks premium with a flat bottom. The Audi-like air vents look cool on the dash, the freestanding touchscreen blends nicely with any other design cues.

4. Renault Triber vs Maruti Ertiga Features: Which is safer and more convenient?

Comfort Features Comparison

The Renault Triber is really a well-loaded MPV. The car is packed with an array of bells and whistles, including an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto supports, a digital instrument panel with 3.5-inch LCD display, etc. The interior delivers quite a premium feel thanks to the adoption of good quality materials.

The cabin space is ample too, with enough legroom and headroom for the second row of seat. The third row is fairly comfortable, but the headroom is not as generous as that of the second one. Other interior features of the Triber encompass circular knobs on the centre console, various storage spaces, rear AC vents mounted on the pillars, keyless entry, engine start/stop push button, power windows among others.

In the meantime, the Maruti Ertiga is really user-friendly with more creature comforts. Apart from these above fitments, the Ertiga comes with Maruti’s SmartPlay functionalities, MID on the instrument cluster, cooled storage, rear parking sensors, tilt and telescopic steering with audio control, adjustable headrests for each row, auto climate control, central locking and more.

Safety Features Comparison

Both Renault Triber and Maruti Ertiga come with enough safety essentials including dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, high-speed alert, driver and passenger seatbelt reminder as standard across the range.

The Maruti Ertiga has a solid build thanks to the strong yet lightweight Heartect Platform that also underpins other Maruti vehicles. The Ertiga endears itself with more safety features such as hill-hold technology, electronic stability programme, ISOFIX child seat mount, rear parking camera for the range-topping variant, central locking, brake assist, engine immobiliser, etc.

Apart from the standard features, the Renault Triber, on the other hand, comes with some safety bits such as two side airbags for the top-spec trim along with Speed Sensing Door Lock & Impact Sensing Unlock for the RXL and RXE+ variants.
